| A Gift From God! |
 |
This afternoon I went with my wife and three girls to the shopping mall, just planning to browse around.
Our first stop was the pet shop. In one of the cages was one of the cutest little puppies we'd ever seen! It was a 10 week old female lhasa/bichon mix. It had an absolutely adorable coat of brown, beige, and black fur, with the exception of its two snow white front paws.
I actually somewhat surprised myself when I suggested that we have it taken out of the cage for a closer look, especially being that we already own a 1 1/2 year old Maltese.
Fifteen minutes of playing with the pup out of the cage was all it took. We fell in love with the little bundle of spunk and ended up taking her home! Our girls, ages 5, 8, and 11, were ecstatic. Admittedly, so were my wife and I!
Our next task was of course to name her. So on the drive home, and throughout much of the day, we all tossed name ideas back and forth.
We ended up with a long list of name ideas and yet nothing seemed quite right. Then, as we were getting ready for bed, a name that had earlier been mentioned by my oldest daughter, Julianna, came to mind again; the name "Nala"...
Julianna had informed me that Nala was the name of the female lion in the popular movie, The Lion King. I looked at the new puppy, recited the name in my mind again, and for some strange reason concluded right then that Nala was the perfect name! For whatever reason it suddenly FELT RIGHT. I mentioned this to the girls and they instantly agreed, as did my wife.
Finally, we had our name!
It's funny, here we'd been debating names all day. The name Nala wasn't in the running as anybody's top pick. Not even close. But then, upon bringing it up again, we all agreed on it almost instantly!
Earlier, we'd been browsing through a book of baby names to help with ideas. The book was one of those that lists the given meanings behind each name. After we decided upon the name Nala, an interesting thought came to mind. We certainly considered this furry new addition to our family to be a blessing and gift from God, so my exact thought was, "Wouldn't it be cool if the name Nala meant something significant - something like 'God's gift'?
Either way, I was curious to know what the name meant. So I picked up the book of baby names again and scanned it for the name Nala. No luck. My next choice was Google. After a couple searches I discovered that the animal characters in the The Lion King movie (Simba, Pumbaa, Nala, etc.) were all Swahili in origin. Each Swahili name also had a specific meaning. Now I was getting somewhere.
After some more digging, I came across a Wikipedia (online encyclopedia) page specifically about The Lion King character Nala. Bingo!
You'll never believe what I read within the first paragraph of that page:
"Nala means "gift" in Swahili."
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nala_(The_Lion_King)
Just for the record, I don't speak Swahili! And I certainly had no prior clue what the word "Nala" meant when the "God's gift" phrase came to mind (well before I looked up Nala's meaning).
Indeed, Nala is our GIFT from God! |
