ON THE EDGE
Have you ever heard someone say, "I am on the edge?" Maybe it's a child out of control, a job not going well or a relationship gone sour that has done this. Whatever it may be, most all have experienced being "on the edge". There is something related to these examples I want to address: "on the edge" as it pertains to God.

A new one dollar coin commemorating past presidents is being minted. The uniqueness of these coins: the phrase "In God We Trust" is no longer on the face of the coin; it has been placed on the edge. In fact, during the first minting of these coins there was a glitch: many did not have the phrase "In God We Trust" on the edge! In the world"s eyes, these became instant collector's items. It only got me to thinking about God. Could placing "In God We Trust" on the edge of these coins be the first step to this glitch becoming a reality?

There has been a move to push God from society. In the early 1960's God was pushed out of public schools. In the workplace we must "honor diversity" by pushing God out of the conversation so as to not offend. Some have petitioned the courts to remove the phrase "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance and to have "In God We Trust" removed from all currency.

As Christians, we need to ask ourselves: Have our lives become so full that we are pushing God to the edge of our priority list? Do we find it more appealing to hit the snooze button two or three times before rising instead of getting up a little early to pray? When faced with the daily grind, do we turn to God for help and wisdom to get us through? When the marriage is on rocky ground and the children are out of control, do we seek God for the answers? Consider this:

When we were "born again" we were on fire for the things of God. He was in the forethought of everything. We got up thinking about Him, we went through the day talking about Him, we went to bed thanking Him; we couldn't wait to go to church to hear more about Him. When everyday life would throw us a curve, we would turn to God's word for guidance and comfort. In a manner of speaking, just as our currency displays, God was in front of us or "on our faces" as it were. But over time, as life would often put us "on the edge", we began to put Him "on the edge" of our lives. Instead of drawing near in times of need, we pushed Him away, turning to self-help books, drugs, therapy, etc., until He, like those defective coins experienced, was now "off the edge".
And this is exactly what the enemy of our souls wants to happen!

Some day, maybe in our lifetime, we may see "In God We Trust" removed from our currency. It is even possible that "under God" may be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance. I pray this won't happen but, more importantly, I pray we never see the day God is either placed on the edge of our daily lives or removed all together. Life in this world is something we must face daily, but it is only for a season. May we behold the face of God continually, as we face life's "on the edge" challenges! Seek the Lord while He may be found (Isaiah 55:6) and find help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16).
