Working To Get Back To The Garden Part Three
In part two, we saw the cost involved in supporting two incomes and that it is possible to adjust to one income for the sake of the children and to line up with God’s perfect will regarding work. In part three, we take a look at further adjustments to our lifestyle that will help us in making the change a successful one.

Here are some ideas on how to adjust to a single income that will allow you to still enjoy life: instead of Nordstrom’s, shop at thrift stores or hit garage sales for clothing. Stay away from name brand clothing wherever possible. Clip coupons, make a shopping list and buy groceries through the ads. Eat before going grocery shopping! This will minimize the temptation to impulse buy. Eat out less often and prepare meals at home by making menus and shopping for ingredients from those menus. (Remember, you are now home and have the time to prepare meals that are not only cheaper per serving but also much healthier). Wait for those movies to come out on DVD and rent them to watch at home. Drive cars with good gas mileage and plan your errands to get the most out of your drive time. While we’re at it, let’s get crazy here and go so far as to cancel presents at Christmas. I’m not saying give up Christmas; just this part of how the world celebrates it. Imagine the money you could save! Or, as an alternative, instead of buying those material gifts, donate the amount you would spend to Christian charities. What a boost it would give as they struggle to help the needy. Plus, the bible does say that it is more blessed to give than to receive, right?

So stop “buying the lie”! We were meant to freely serve each other, not be slaves to our jobs and the way of life spelled out by the world instead of the Word. Besides, there really is more to life than how much money you have or the “success” of a rewarding career. True success is in seeing your children succeed; that is what I call really giving them a better life than we had!

When we came to faith in Jesus, we had to wrestle with knowing that the choice to follow Him would require changes in our lives; changes that, in the face of it, made it difficult to “let go and let God”. 20/20 hindsight revealed that we gave up nothing of real value and gained so much more as a result. So it is with work. To embrace the biblical definition of work is so much more rewarding than we can imagine. He always gives back much more than we give up! We are to store up our treasures in Heaven anyway. What greater treasure can there be than insuring that your children are Heaven bound along with you!

One final thought: you will need to overcome the misconception regarding the word “equal”. The world has perverted that word (like so many others) and turned the fact that both men and women are equal into a contest of sorts. “I can do anything you can do…and better!” This will take great faith to undo. Just know that, even though the Bible assigns men and women different roles, we are all equal in His eyes; especially when we live our lives according to His perfect will!! So, go ahead. Check it out for yourself. WARNING: Remember, no matter how you look at it, it is still work! It won’t be easy and it won’t happen overnight but, with God “all things are possible to those who believe”. Oh, and happy gardening!
