Signs
God speaks to His children in a variety of ways. Often His word, the Bible, provides the answers we're seeking. Sometimes He uses other people to send us a message. Sometimes our answers come through thoughts that He impresses upon us.

And sometimes God sends "signs" to speak to us.

My church recently started a basketball league, and one of the associate pastors asked if I'd like to participate. I initially decided not to join for a variety of reasons. We'd just moved into a new home and were still getting settled in. It had been a long time since I'd played competitive basketball. I was also hesitant simply because I'm still fairly new to the church and wouldn't know anybody on the team.

But then I figured that if I could get a friend to come along and play as well, I'd give the basketball league a shot. So I gave my friend Gene a call. Our first game was that night, and Gene was my only option on short notice due to his open schedule. Unfortunately Gene declined and admitted, "I'm just not an athlete!"

So that was that. Gene wasn't interested, and I wasn't going without the moral support. I decided to say a little prayer to help me with my indecision. I said, "Lord, if you want me to join this new church basketball league, just give me a sign and I'll go - whether I 'feel like it' or not."

...Literally within a minute or two after I'd prayed that simple prayer, my friend Gene called and informed me that he'd changed His mind and wanted to play ball! (Several hours had passed since I'd talked to him about it.)

It was crystal clear at that point that God had answered my prayer in a special way, and that He wanted me in the league. I ended up having a great first game that night (even though my basketball skills were *extremely* rusty), and we even ended up winning!

Many people, including Christians, unfortunately don't realize that you can have a close, intimate relationship with the Lord. In fact, that's the type of relationship that God desires to have with each of us. I've found that I can ask God about even the smallest of things, things that are insignificant to most, and still receive signs and answers...

This past weekend I was out fishing for bass with my dad and brother, and wasn't sure which fishing lure to use. So "insignificant or not", I prayed another very simple prayer asking God to give me a sign as to whether the red and black spinnerbait lure I was currently using was the one to stick with. And what happened on my VERY NEXT cast following that prayer? I hooked into what was most likely my biggest fish of the day. I ended up losing him when he buried himself in the weeds, but I had my sign! There "wasn't no way" I was going to switch to a different lure after what I felt was an immediate answer to prayer. (It wasn't like we were catching fish and getting strikes left and right either. It had been a good hour-or-so since I'd had my last strike.)

...In sticking with that same lure, I ended up with the most fish of the day. At one point (after "the sign"), I caught 3 bass in a span of about 10 minutes, causing my dad and brother to switch over to similar red and black colored spinnerbait lures as well.

God knows every little thing about us. He knows what we think. He knows what we feel. He knows our desires. He knows us better than we know ourselves! I don't believe there is any prayer that is too big - or to SMALL - for God to answer. He hears us when we talk to Him, and He *wants* to bless us with his replies!
