| The Importance Of Trust Part I |
 |
Beginning today I'll be posting a series of short studies the Lord has been leading me through about Trust. I want to take a look at three particular facets: First, how God trusts us; second, how we can trust God; and lastly, how we trust each other. Today, however, is just a brief look at the importance of trust, to lay the groundwork for the studies to follow...
There is one immutable rule in this world for every single human being who has ever existed: We will all be emotionally injured at some point in our life. We will all, without exception, seek to avoid this inevitability but, like the pinch on the cheek from that annoying aunt, it is simply inescapable.
It stands to reason that, since we can't avoid being hurt, there must be some purpose for it. Physical pain tells us when something needs repair, or how to avoid mistakes that will cause the condition. Fire burns, knives cut, and heavy objects crush. Few normal individuals enjoy being hurt, but the glimpse of a leper would show us the benefits. Lacking sensation, we would burn, lacerate, and break without our knowledge. As tempting as a life without pain sounds, the alternative would lead inescapably to debilitating problems.
Our emotional pain comes from different sources, but is no less problematic. In fact, it's more so, because physical pain often has treatments to mitigate it, while emotional pain is far more difficult to blunt. The reasons for it can be far more elusive as well; we may feel like crying, screaming, etc. and be fairly oblivious as to the true source of our malaise.
However, as with physical pain, emotional turmoil is a source of learning and growth. Life deals us a blow and we must either learn to mature from it, or react in bitterness and anger. We grow up, or we grow resentful.
Why am I talking about emotions when I'm supposed to be talking about trust? Because it's trust's betrayal that is so often responsible for our emotional pain. We trust our heart to another, only to have it broken; we trust our careers to our employers, only to be betrayed when there's money to be made; we trust people with our money, only to be robbed when our back is turned. Wherever we go in this life, trust is our most valuable and fragile currency. Earning it takes a lifetime of diligence and effort, but it can all be spent in mere moments.
In the life of a human there are very few things we can trust in with complete confidence. We believe the sun will rise in the morning, but even that is not assured. Of all in creation, the only thing truly worthy of complete trust is the Creator. God alone has been unchanging and unfailing, true to every promise He has made.
Trust is the foundation of our life. It's faith's near twin; the bedrock upon which we base our hopes and dreams. Whatever cynicism we may cling to, a life without trust is nearer to death than living.
In part two of this study we'll begin to look at how God trusts us, and how that amazing trust is the benchmark for each of us to aspire to. Look for God's Trust In Us Part II. |
